What happens when you smile…

Smile by Unknown (though could be Spike Milligan)

Smiling is infectious

You catch it like the flu

When someone smiled at me today

I started smiling too

I walked around the corner

And someone saw me grin

When he smiled I realised

I’d passed it on to him

I thought about the smile

Then realised it’s worth

A single smile like mine

Could travel round the earth

So if you feel a smile begin

Don’t leave it undetected

Start an epidemic

And get the world infected

So what does happen to your body when you smile?

Well, for a start you immediately start to feel better about the day. There are thousands of ways we communicate our emotions by moving the muscles in our face. The most powerful and instantly recognisable is the smile. Smiling has been found to lift your mood and reduce stress by activating the release of neuropeptides. These send messages to the whole body about how we are feeling, our emotions. When we smile, dopamine, endorphins and serotonin (the feelgood neurotransmitters) are all released which helps to lower blood pressure and heart rate. And it doesn’t have to be an involuntary smile like when you hear a joke or see a cute puppy. Try smiling at yourself in the mirror in the morning, as you’re making breakfast, or in the shower. Give yourself a huge genuine smile and see how you feel. You can’t help but be uplifted. The act of smiling regardless of where it comes from has this effect. I smile loads (I also talk to myself, but that’s a different story) If I feel a bit fed up, something’s got my back up or not going the way I want it to I take myself aside, look out the window and smile. It immediately calms me down. And it’s not just the psychological effects that are beneficial. People who smile are seen as more attractive. It suggests they are happy with life and having a good time, and we all want to have a good time, right? Your smile affects others as well as yourself. It’s infectious. I play a little game when I’m on my morning walk. I try to make eye contact with everyone I meet and smile and say good morning. I try to guess the ones that will smile and greet me back or even the ones that initiate the greeting before me. Simple pleasures I know, but hey, that’s me! It’s amazing how many look like they’re going to completely ignore me yet when I catch their eye they break into a wonderful grin. And you just never know what that person is going through right then. They might be having the toughest time, feel like they’ve nothing to smile about, and then there I am beaming at them from ear to ear! Someone they’ve never met before and all of a sudden they’re smiling back and releasing all those endorphins.
